- Vince McMahon claimed that Shawn Michaels had some divine intervention in their match at Wrestlemania 22. Vince announced that he and Shane would take on Shawn Michaels at Backlash, and HBK's partner will be ... God!
- The three men at the top of the card at Backlash will be John Cena, Triple H, and Edge. There is an arguement for any of these three to be the champion, but we'll find out who it is as they do battle in a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship.
- Despite being friends on RAW, there has always been a competiveness between the yougsters, Chris Masters and Carlito. After Carlito felt Chris Masters cost them the match for the tag-titles at Wrestlemania, he attacked Masters to set up the contest for Backlash.

- Also on the card, Umaga makes his PPV debut against vetran Ric Flair; former partners Kane and Big Show face-off; and Rob Van Dam takes on Shelton Benjamin in a winner-take-all (MITB vs IC) match.
